Killybegs heroically battle through to the last four
Na Cealla Beaga 1-08, Dungloe 1-07
By Frank Craig - Donegal Post
Killybegs are through to the semi finals of the Donegal senior football championship after they staged an amazing second half fight back, despite being robbed of the services of Kevin Fallon - who was sent to the line at the midpoint point of the first half.
Trailing on a score line of 0-3 to 1-3, Fallon was flashed a second yellow card by referee Pat Walsh. Although judging by the reaction of the player and those around him – this looked very much like a case of mistaken identity.
Already without the services of Conal Molloy, this was always going to be a big ask. But a trojan second half effort from Peter McGinley’s men deservedly saw them over the line.
It was Killybegs that opened the scoring after Christopher Murrin’s high ball into the mixer broke kindly to Daniel Breslin inside the second minute.
However, Dungloe soon found their rhythm and hit three uninterrupted scores to edge two to the good with eight minutes on the clock. First Shaun Sharkey found space on the far left to angle over, before Noel McBride and Adrian Sweeney added two more quick fire efforts.
Ciaran Tully then took the direct approach and it paid instant dividends as he drew an inviting free for Kevin Martin to angle over his first of the day on fourteen minutes.
Just when it looked like Killybegs were getting a foothold on proceedings, disaster struck. Benny McGarvey carved a hole through the middle of the Killybegs’ rearguard before off loading to Adrian Sweeney inside and he coolly slotted past O’Hara in the Killybegs goal.
If that wasn’t bad enough for the Fishermen, their afternoon was about to get a whole lot worse as Kevin Fallon was dismissed amidst a siege of pushing and shoving. Referee Pat Walsh, on the prompting of his umpires, made a huge call and at this early juncture tipped the scales firmly in Dungloe’s favour.
Paul McGinley did reply positively for Killybegs immediately after, before Kevin Martin spurned an excellent opportunity from the placed ball to reduce the difference to two.
Mark Boyle then presented Martin with an immediate chance to redeem himself on the right but the forward was off the mark once more.
To make matters worse Barry Cannon looked to have been dragged out of contention for possession straight down the other end, allowing Adrian Sweeney the chance to extend the advantage out to four on a score line of 1-4 to 0-3 on the thirty-minute mark.
With four minutes of added time flashed on the electronic board, Martin (free) was able to bring his side back to within one green flag of the leaders. But Sharkey’s huge effort from distance soon restored his side’s four-point advantage.
Right on the stroke of half time the wing back repeated that feat with another well-taken score. A stoppage in added time provided Killybegs with one last attack for the half and Daniel Breslin closed out proceedings with a fine strike on the stand side.
Killybegs exploded out of the blocks for the second half, and were almost straight back in contention when Kevin Martin buried to the back of Ciaran Sharkey’s net after great work from David Conwell, Ronan Boyle and Jason Noctor down the right wing.
Daniel Breslin then won another excellent opportunity for Kevin Martin to draw his side level from the dead ball – a curling beauty that crept inside the left hand post at just the right time.
Amazingly, Killybegs were now the side in the ascendancy. With the persistent Noctor shackling Adrian Sweeney inside – Peter McGinley’s men were admirably bringing the fight to the Rosses outfit.
However, despite their tenacity, neither Killybegs nor Dungloe were able to post anything on the scoreboard for nearly a quarter of an hour. But when the stalemate did end, it was Martin that broke it with an excellent left boot on the right hand side to push his side in the lead for the first time, with just under thirteen minutes remaining in an absorbing second half of action.
Killybegs passed up two glorious chances to extend their slender advantage as both Paul McGinley and Kevin Martin (free) were off cue.
Benny McGarvey took advantage of that generosity to level proceedings on a score line of 1-7 apiece with six minutes of time remaining.
Killybegs then introduced Manus Boyle into the fray in an attempt to steady their nerves. And it seemed to have the desired effect as Breslin arrowed over with the outside of the boot after Boyle had showed a cool head in the build up.
With a minute of added time to be played, the contest was delicately poised – but excellent retention of the ball by Breslin ate into that sixty seconds and gave Killybegs a deserving place in the semis.
For so long the undisputed kingpins of club football in the North West; 2010 has so far been a memorable year for the Fishermen, both on and off the field of play. Can they continue that momentum in their semi final battle with Four Masters?

Killybegs send Ardara packing -
By Frank Craig (Donegal Post)
Killybegs are through to the
quarter finals of the senior championship after they just about edged out Ardara
in a fiercely contested encounter at a wind swept Pairc na nGael in
Glencolmcille on Sunday.
Ardara, electing to play with the aid of
the elements for the opening period, could only muster up five white flags - and
that statistic went a long way to deciding this one. Killybegs hustled and
harried their opponents and took shrewd advantage of a number of stoppages to
reach the half time marker only three points off the pace. It was Killybegs that
actually opened the scoring after a tentative and scrappy twelve minutes of
action. Kevin Martin chipped over a twenty-five metre free after Conal Molloy
had been upended on the move. Ardara finally got off the mark through Peter
McNelis after Francis Diver had jinked through the middle. Diver then got in on
the act himself, finishing off a fine passage of play that also involved McNelis
and Gallagher to lead 0-2 to 0-1 twelve minutes from the break. Ardara then
doubled their tally as Stephen McHugh and Stephen Gildea split the posts.
Conscious that his side needed to find more scores fast, Ardara boss Patrick
Gallagher introduced the lively Marty Shovlin at the expense of Jimmy O'Connell
up front. While Shovlin didn't get on the score sheet, he did ask immediate
questions of the Killybegs rearguard. And it was his blocked shot that feel
kindly to Diver to leave matters 0-5 to 0-2 in Ardara's favour. At this stage it
looked ominous for the 2004 champions - but they deserve credit for their second
half efforts. They exploded out of the blocks to bang in the contest's opening
goal just forty seconds after the restart. Kenneth Doherty drove at the heart of
the Fishermen's defence. He then managed to off lead to Peter McNelis at just
the right moment before the latter slipped the ball inside for Gildea to slot
home from close range. Seconds later Peter McNelis ghosted through once more but
seemed to be dragged back. Referee Kieran McShea didn't see it that way however,
and Killybegs instantly turned defence into attack, as Paul McGinley got on the
end of a field length break to blast his side back into contention. With just
three points the margin once again, Killybegs' tails were well and truly up.
Smelling blood, Conal Molloy reduced the difference to two with a huge effort
from fifty plus metres. Despite the initial confusion as to whether the ball had
actually reached its desired target - it was finally signalled over and
Killybegs were back in the hunt.Ardara then passed up another goal chance when
Doherty again powered through to set up Noel Gallagher. Gallagher elected to
take his point despite the pleas of Gildea inside and the opportunity was gone.
Gildea did manage to chip over from the free to push his side four points to the
good after an earlier miss, but you sensed at this stage that Ardara needed to
find the onion bag once more if they were to pull this one out of the fire. The
opportunity did present itself once more - and again it was Gildea sniffing
about inside that nearly claimed the result for his side. Ardara broke through
once more only for Peter McNelis' attempted square to Gildea to be cut out by a
desperate stray boot from Barry Cannon - the chance went begging and with that
so did Ardara's Dr Maguire aspirations for 2010. Killybegs hit five scores
uninterrupted before the end to squeeze home after a pulsating second half of
entertainment. Kevin Martin (2), Conal Molloy and Paul McGinley tied matters up
with ten minutes of play left on the watch. Two minutes later and Killybegs were
in front as Shane 'Baker' Boyle raced clear to dissect the posts. Even then,
Ardara had chances to force the game to extra time but fell agonisingly short of
the posts. Both McHugh (free) and Doherty found the distance but couldn't beat
the breeze as both efforts went the wrong side of the upright. Killybegs' effort
really was a team one but the individual endeavours of Conal Molloy, Paul
McGinley and Christopher Murrin were a huge contributory factor. For Ardara
Kenneth Doherty, Paddy McGrath, Fran Diver and the busy Martin Shovlin tried
hardest.
Ardara:
Declan Gallagher, Kevin Breslin: Declan Gavigan: Kevin Byrne; Stephen Boyle:

Reseve Game - Ardara did all the work in the first half to book their place
in the last eight of the Donegal Senior Reserve Football Championship with a
narrow victory over Killybegs at a windy Pairc Na nGael, Glencolmcille on Sunday
afternoon. In the proverbial game of two halves Ardara laid the foundation for
their victory in the first half as they hit nine points without reply and were
9-0 up at the half-time interval. But despite extending their advantage out to
11 point at the start of the second period thanks to two Jonathan Boyle frees,
the winners were clinging on at the finish as wind assisted Killybegs mounted a
revival and came within a whisker of earning a draw at least.
Former county ace Manus Boyle scored all of Killybegs scores including a goal
ten minutes from the end that set up a spine tingling finish. But in the end the
Fishermen just came up short as Ardara held on.

SENIOR & RESERVE
The Reserve team lost to Kilcar by one point in the Reserve Championship last weekend.
Both the senior and Reserve teams are away to Four Masters in the League this weekend.
U-12 PARISH LEAGUE
Cross
are the Champions.............................................Crossmaglen Rangers win the Jamesie Boyle U12 Parish League!
In what could be described as an unorthodox competition, where there were bonus points for skill development, coaching mornings by senior players, the contentious three points for a point and even four quarters (or four halves as was suggested one morning) the completion was run on a league basis over the summer to provide football for our u12’s and also an attempt at emphasising some of the skills of the game. Rather than laboriously attempting to report on every match I will attempt to highlight some of the moments that I felt stood out……….
Corofin, managed by Peter McGinley, had a lot of great performances throughout the league. Their blocking and high catching were even awarded bonus points even though they lost the games. The deft left foot of Keelan, the pace and anticipation of Brandon, Niamh’s willingness to work for the team, Michael Callaghan’s wonderfully tenacious tackling, Great saves from Garth Hickey, the poaching instincts of Susanne White (the cuteness of Jimmy and the Economy of Paddy), Nathan’s versatility and red jacket that I cannot find for love no money, Joshua’s strength and unhappiness at every single refereeing decision, Christian Boyle’s enthusiasm, with one great block coming to mind, and finally Jack’s perfectly executed near hand tackle in the semi are the great moments that these players brought to this tournament. Every game they played they competed in and were still well in it at the end of the third “half”. Ooh yes, I’ll not forget to mention the leadership and never-say-die attitude of Captain Dara Mclean..
Managed enthusiastically by Shane Molloy was the Drom-Broadford team, were an exception league team. They had many of the hallmarks of their manager; a gung ho approach whilst attacking and a get stuck into them attitude whilst defending. Daniel Doogan’s fearlessness, anticipation and relentless desire had to be witnessed to be believed for one so young, Michael Carr’s awareness and subtle skills, Marks no nonsense approach, Ciara’s endurance and work ethic, Daniels range of scoring, Conan’s kick outs, Ryan Carr’s tackling, Sara has her Daddy’s enthusiasm, Rory Boyle’s cuteness at getting first to the ball, Darragh McGuinness’ anticipation and use of the ball, Oran McGuinness’ sheer energy and last but certainly not least was Conor Callaghan’s influence, his strength, ball retention and blocking were similar to many of his great performances in the u12 league, a player who typified his managers attitude to football. Of course in the semi final, where Shane could not make it, Conal filled as manager for the day, bringing enthusiasm and encroachment to a whole new level.
Well now on to Kilmacud Crokes, the team that steam rolled through the league, managed by Declan Dixie Hegarty. Dixie, reminiscent of John Maughan in 1996 & 97, with his almost military styled set up and tanned complexion, had his team moving well. Over powering and over running all the opposition in the LEAGUE, Dixie was on the verge of an unprecedented double, having successfully negotiated his way to the pedestal of the under10 parish league a week previously, and kept his able and trusted advisor and selector, Michael McHugh (the Tony Donnelly of the set up) by his side, confidence was at bursting point. In what was a wonderful team with Aran’s tackling, Luke’s completive streak, Niamh’s pace, Michael’s ability to link play for one so young, Karl’s nonchalant style, Ryan Cunningham’s movement, awareness and wonderful left foot, Charlie Breslin’s blocking, Seamus Og’s brave heart displays at the back, Owen McGing's enthusiasm holds no bounds with the skills to match and well Jack’s simply the teams silent assassin with wonderful awareness, ball retention, pace and love of the game (surely traits he inherited from the Curran clann) were all the skills & attributes this side brought to the completion. Although the final was a disappointment for them, where they only lost out in the final moments, this team really lit up the whole tournament. They were joy to watch.. Unfortunately this is of scant consolation to them in the aftermath of a lost final. I am going to break with tradition and compliment a young man who is one of the best players I have ever coached. For one so young his attitude is the best I have dealt with. In adversity, whilst getting a few heavy defeats, this young lad stood & fought for this team, tooth and nail as if his life depended on it when it was surely easier to throw in the towel and certainly lesser players would have. His range of skill is such that it can be difficult to suggest a weakness, a jack of all trades - he can shoot, tackle, high catches, blocking, throw dummy, win 60-40’s, and he has a great awareness of what is happening around so his ball retention and passing are strengths he can call upon too- but he has this range due to his attitude to the game that is what separates’ him from the rest. Evan, keep up the good work and please do not be disheartened by such a difficult year, our day will come.
Finally to the winners Crossmaglen Rangers who saved their best displays for the knockout stages, a championship team if you like. Managed by the highly relaxed and composed (but cute as an ol’ fox) Cha Tully. Having managed his counterpart as a player he was quietly confident of an upset. This was going to be tactical, Cha seemed up for the battle, it reminded me of his famous “cornflakes” speech in ‘06 in the lead up to the county final, such was the glare in his eyes. His team responded to his enthusiasm on the day. The improvement and maturity of Mark Hegarty was evident in the final, sticking to his task meticulously, Rory showed glimpses of his potential throughout but none more so in the final Quarter with a point and a rally that gave his team the timely lift they needed, Kalen wasn’t there for the final but some of his displays in the sweeper role in the league were exceptional, Calum Quinn- what a left foot, what a player, Niall Campbell carried his exceptional form from the week before in the u10 parish league, such pace and anticipation, Conor Cunningham, like his older brother has a wonderful poise and composure, attributes that are merely impossible to coach, Cory, again for one so young, never gave the ball away on his debut, Michael Statham; his commitment and courage were exceptional, playing the semi and the final with a sore foot, he never relented (or complained, unlike his silver haired neighbour who never stops!!!!!!), Killian brought a great enthusiasm to the team on the final day, wee Knoxy has the heart of a lion and was exceptional in the final, and Roisin, the captain, she showed great enthusiasm throughout the year, listened intently to everything, learned from her mistakes, and improved every single day she came to Fintra, ultimately she really wanted to get better. A perfect example of the ode “the more you practice, the luckier you get”.
A few words of thanks; to The managers of the teams, thanks for your commitment to the project, I am sure you enjoyed it; to the players, keep coming back, there is a marked improvement in many of you; to Rita and her team of Chefs, thanks for big effort, it helped make the tournament; to the u10 managers, who filled in for when some of the mangers couldn’t make it, helped with setting up pitches and goals and were there to give advice and help on anything, thanks lads; to the Ref’s Paul Hegarty, Christy Cunningham, Shane Murrin, Jimmy White and a very special thanks to Lee Jordan who came down to ref the final for us, I know it wasn’t easy with some of the rule changes and what not but you all did great. Thanks to John Murray for helping me manage the u12 team in the southern league, it was good to have someone to bounce ideas off, even to keep a check on something crazy I might come up with!!!! And finally to the Minor Board, who supported the project and helped particularly with the final day, helping to make a fitting memorial for the Boyle family to Jamesie. Paul’s experience and attention to detail is particularly useful when trying to put together a tournament.
I hope I left nobody out, if so I apologise.

The tournament was first played in the 1989 in memory of the late Eamonn Byrne who died at the very young age of 32 years, while playing for his club Killybegs in a senior league match in Ballyshannon in June 1988. Eamonn who hailed from County Wicklow came to Killybegs in the early seventies and over a fifteen year period he gave outstanding service to the Killybegs club, playing football and hurling for many years, also playing hurling for the Donegal Senior team in the early eighties. This year the club will be hosting teams from Dungloe, Naomh Nauls, Naomh Columba,Kilcar,Four Masters, Glen Maghera from Derry and for the first time Skryne from County Meath, all these teams should provide a feast of football in McDevitt Park.
